How to Maintain Your Fitness Routine While Traveling

One of the easiest ways to disrupt a habit is to change your routine. If you’ve built up a workout habit, going on vacation or traveling for work are sure fire ways to derail that habit. Unless, you come prepared. Here are six ways you can maintain your fitness routine while traveling.

Go in With a Plan

If you know where you’re traveling and what you’ll be doing, it’s easy to create a fitness plan that fits your trip. Your fitness plan can include things like:

  • Marking on your calendar when you can visit the hotel gym
  • What activities you can do that will keep you active and moving around
  • Where you can go out to eat and get healthy meals

Having a plan will help you to avoid falling into what’s convenient — sleeping in 15 more minutes instead of going to the gym and grabbing fast food because you don’t know where else to eat and are starving.

Choose a Hotel with a Gym

If you get to pick where you stay, check out the hotel amenities ahead of time. Many hotels now have decent gyms with quality equipment. If there’s a gym at the hotel, all you need is a spare 30 to 45 minutes in your day to get in your workout.

Stick to Bodyweight-Only, Strength-Focused Workouts

If you’re planning to workout while you’re traveling, you’ll want to come in with a workout plan. When you get to the gym, know what exercises you’ll be doing and plan to go hard. Focus on high-intensity exercises so you can finish quickly.

If your hotel doesn’t have a gym, you can still come in with a hotel-friendly, bodyweight only workout, or find one on YouTube. Strength training is for everyone, everywhere—as long as you come prepared.

Embrace the Local Surroundings

If you’re looking to maintain your fitness routine while traveling, you have more options than to just work out in the hotel gym. Get creative! Consider signing up for local activities such as bike tours, rock climbing, or hiking. Mold your fitness to the locale you’re visiting.

Pack the Gear You Need

If you want to stay active while you’re traveling and maintain your fitness routine, you’ll need your gear. Make sure to include the right shoes, clothes, and equipment in your packing list and leave room for everything you might need in your suitcase.

Balance Travel and Sleep

Whether you’re traveling for work or pleasure, it’s easy to indulge in the fun parts of life while you’re away from home: going out to eat, staying up late, and enjoying all that a new place has to offer. There’s nothing wrong with having fun while traveling, but if you want to maintain your fitness routine, be sure to find a balance between your sleep and your travel fun so you have enough energy to hit the gym and stay active.

When you’re away from home, it’s easy to let habits and routines slide. If you want to maintain your fitness routine while traveling, you’ll want to pack the gear you need, be prepared with a plan, and be ready to embrace the local activities.
