Zachary’s Notes – October 2023 – Hurricanes, Real Estate, and the Nile in Style

Greetings HE Travelers,

I apologize for the delay in providing my monthly notes due to a whirlwind of activities over the past many weeks. Here’s a recap of what’s been keeping me busy:

Real Estate Ventures:

I spent the summer working, attempting to wrap up my compulsive house rehabilitation projects in Utah. We’ve had a couple of the properties up for sale. The first was a charming 1906 farmhouse which my wife Trisha helped me renovate over the course of 7 years. As well as an 1896 wood and brick Victorian.

These projects have been a labor of love, spanning 17 years of meticulous work. I’ve employed dozens of my friends, family and neighbors over the years to help me work on them. My son was literally born in the dining room of the 1896 Victorian. However, these two projects are finished, and it’s time to move on. Who knows if I’ll be able to ultimately sell the one my son was born in, I’m sentimentally attached to it.

Additionally, I am still deeply involved in my current building rehab project in Salt Lake City. It’s an 1891 All-Brick Victorian. This historic gem is undergoing a remarkable transformation and serves as the physical office for HeTravel.com.

Hurricane Idalia Aftermath:

Unfortunately, my time has also been consumed by the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia, which wreaked havoc in Florida at the end of August. Our newly renovated home in Cedar Key suffered severe flooding, with about 3 feet of water inside the house. The water went over our house’s stilts. Sigh… Time to lift it higher.

Despite the extensive damage, we are grateful that the house is still standing, and attached properly to the foundation. However, the restoration process is akin to starting from scratch, as we must now gut and rehabilitate it…again. Sigh…

On the bright side, we’ve taken the opportunity to install all new appliances, and we are making the best of the situation. Although sometimes it feels like we’re camping, with our makeshift kitchen setup. LOL.

Travel Work:

I’m looking forward to returning to my traveling field work, after a summer of non-stop office work, and reconstruction on these buildings.

The next upcoming tour, which I’m hosting, is the Nile in Style in Egypt. There are a couple of spots that just opened on it. If you are interested in joining, but still have questions about our Egypt tour, please give us a call, or reach out via email.
