Being a digital nomad is no longer a new concept.
When Italy recently announced it was offering a digital nomad visa to attract expats to move there to work, it became the 58th country to do so.
For many countries, the digital nomads represent an economic driver in terms of foreign exchange, and as a result, more countries are now extending the validity dates of their existing digital nomad visas. Another reason is that so many Americans who have moved abroad to work are choosing to stay there, and their presence represents a significant revenue source for governments.
The number of American remote workers in foreign countries hit 17.3 million last year, and perhaps more revealing, more than 6.6 million of them are self-employed.
