Know Your Rights: EC Rule 261

If you’re flying from or within Europe in 2024, you likely have more rights than when traveling in the US. It’s called EC Rule 261, and it has been around for 20 years.

In the event of long flight delays, cancellations, or denied boarding, you’ll receive compensation almost immediately.

If your flight originates in a European Union country — even if it’s on a US airline — you’re covered.

There are exceptions for weather, but if the problem is deemed under the airline’s control, you qualify.

Not every airline volunteers this information, so just remember the magic words: EC 261.

One more thing: the airline must pay you in cash or check. They cannot simply offer travel vouchers or future flight credits unless you authorize it in writing.
