LIGHT & ULTRALIGHT BACKPACKING: Sili-Dripper

If you’re anything like my wife, your day can’t start properly without coffee. The inherent problem in the backcountry is that there are few lightweight, safe and convenient options to get your java kick. Some suggest lugging around battery-powered gizmos while others encourage potential burns by holding filters. Then there is “Cowboy Coffee” – placing the grounds straight in the water, letting it settle, and carefully drinking around it. No thanks.
The Sili-Dripper is an ingenious collapsible alternative to making coffee safely. It rests on top of a mug no larger than 4” in diameter and allows hot water to pass through it when paired with a #2 coffee filter. The device is essentially hands-free.

The Sili-Dripper is FDA & NSF approved. Made of food-grade silicone, it is BPA free and lead-free, heat resistant to 500 degrees fahrenheit, won’t hold stains or absorb odors, and is dishwasher safe.
The Sili-Dripper also has a small loop near the rim enabling it to be attached to a backpack. When paired with a Sea-to-Summit Collapsible X-Mug (64g/$11), you’ve got a…well, flat and lightweight pairing to meet your coffee delivery system needs.

While outside the recommended usage, I also found that the Sili-Dripper worked well as a pot-gripper. After all, it is heat-resistant and made of food-grade silicone and was flexible enough to fold over my fingers to safely manipulate hot cooking pots.
Bottom line, if you’re looking for a convenient, safe, effective and lightweight option to brew your cuppa-Joe, consider the Sili-Dripper.  If you’d like to try to win one for free, please leave a comment at the bottom of this blog describing where you’d like to use it.  A winner will be selected at random in the near future.
