Room 46 at the National Gallery – The Flaneur

It’s only small, and filled with none of the famous pictures that attract the crowds to the National Gallery. Nevertheless a turn or two around room 46 is highly recommended.

It shows a selection of small oils from the 19th century, showcasing landscape painting in Europe. The French government’s Prix de Rome focused attention on the Italian landscape and there are many images here from that country of dramatic light.

Highlights:

Thomas Jones, A Wall in Naples

Peder Balke, The Tempest.
